Der Grund, warum ich nicht Deutsch sprechen

Today is an important day in your history – in Donkey Island history as well as World History. ‘Why pray tell?’ – you sneer.

Today is the day in 1940 (June 18) when Winston Churchill [yes een Englan’] delivered a most important speech, commonly referred to as,  ‘Their finest hour’.

What General Weygand has called the Battle of France is over: the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say: "This was their finest hour"

These word pierce to the depths of my soul. These were the famous words that drew a Nation together, that shielded the World from the onslaught of the German empire – led by Hitler. The British held them back for a whole year. Worn out, Hitler activated part of his plan to take on Russia and that is another long story. But the important turning point in history was that Britain stood to be conquered by Germany, and Churchill called a whole Nation to defend their future and the future of the world!! And so they did – against all odds.

You! Yes you - coolie bwaye dong in dee bush -  mus’ be wondering whuh dis have tuh do wid you. And dat is because of the sacrifice of 40,000 plus lives, you is whey yuh is. [Der Grund, warum ich nicht Deutsch sprechen = the reason I don’t speak German].
