Identities and errors

FacesSomething unusual happened this morning. The 3 daily newspapers in Trinidad and Tobago actually published the names, addresses and faces of the three men who allegedly raped a woman (late 40’s) and her teenage daughter. This is indeed a first for me. Usually, I see these details after a conviction is achieved. I wonder if the men’s alleged admission of the crime had anything to do with the publication?

Jason Kareem Romeo, 18, of Chrissie Terrace, Enterprise; Joel Vialva, 20, of Goodwill Road, Enterprise; and Stephen Loney, 23, of Goodwill Road, Enterprise, were each charged with two counts of rape and one count of burglary.

The part I don’t get is this:

Because of the sensitive nature of the charges, members of the public as well as the media were not allowed into the courtroom to protect the identities of the victims.

Aren’t we easily identifying them from the published information? Seems that the magistrate is displaying some Monkey Island thinking there.
