Foreskin, Ah sorry tuh hear about dee foreskin t'ing. Genital mutilation of males and females has persisted to this day.. again driven largely by the mindlessness of culture and religious dogma. There are very few medical indications for male circumcision.

In parts of Africa to this day female genital mutilation is carried out by force on young women. The 'elders' or whoever, know they are right to do what they do. And by analogy they are as 'right' in their own minds - justified - as those who promote and support capital punishment.

Yes - you seemed to get there much faster than the Jumbie. And to try and make it clearer for the 'impenetrable' skull of the Jumbie - all I was saying is that if individuals simply allow their personal sense of right or wrong, or their personal sense of justification, or their sense of vengeance to rule their actions - without any hard reference to some key moral principle - then they leave themselves at the mercy of others (namely politicians, cult-leaders, spiritual and religious charlatans). This stems of course from other heated debates we have had out here.

A key moral principle is something that stiffens and shields one's being against the pressure to collude with or bend to acts of injustice.

Tit for tat - and eye for and eye is not a mature way of operation - in the 21st Century. It is simplistic and frankly primitive. When Barbarism is dressed up as something decreed by a political or religioius authority then it becomes easily acceptable and digestable. It is then welcome and embracable.

Hawking has wisely predicted that the human race is unlikely to last another 200 years. I don't know if he would share my viewpoint, but I think we would self-destruct as a race, simply because of our inheretn primitiveness. We can send probes to Mars and beyond our solar system, we can split the atom or create atoms from nothingness, and yet we as a race cannot control our primitive caveman emotions - hence genocide etc etc.

Dear Captain, I chose the screen name 'Foreskin' because it is an important part of the male body. I lost mine before I could remember. My parents had me circumcised based some religious belief that to keep a foreskin was a bad thing. To be honest my missing foreskin makes me think a lot about why people do things.

If I understand you correctly, you are telling us that people should have some understanding of why they tick? I was interested in the business about the Church and in other posts you made on the blog.

It seems strange that a religion such as Christianity could cause people to be murdered for disagreeing. I was also reading on the internet how when they conquered South America they killed natives who refused to change their religious beliefs. I see your point about when people think they are right.

Actually, the evidence is that I have so far refused to give reasons or define my limits. This is a grey are as I see it. I have no definite position because each situation I see has different characteristics and criteria. Some are more humane than others (read humane in the opposite way it is normally defined - humans are the only animal capable of such cruelty, hence the word humane really is an insult to the obvious meaning. With each case my reasons may be different.

As long as I can qualify myself I need not seek approval of anyone. My conscience remains clear.

You engineer a situation where nobody could possible hold you to account, simply because you doh want to - on a particular matter. You appear happy in your beliefs which you know to be right. And as I said elsewhere on the blog -in different ways - he that knows he is right and is unwilling to be challenged finds himself sharing attitudes common to a dangerous kind of 'fundamentalism'.

Any man/woman who makes public utterances of opinion which sway others on matters of social importance, who:
a) cannot (or chooses not for whatever reason) to justify their position with evidence, and or
b) or fails (for whatever reason) to supply reason for the foundations of their beliefs
- is clearly over a certain 'line' and well on the way to self-serving self-deception.

The exercise of power is not simply over people (minds or attitudes) but the power to submit or withdraw from accountability. And accountability is not simply a thing allied to political power - it is about any power. We are accountable to ourselves. So yuh could 'hide' out here on yuh blog.. buh when yuh go tuh bed tuhnight yuh go pretend yuh doh remember me sayin' "Yuh cyah hind from yuhself!".

On the one hand to make assertions (opinions, preferences or wha'everrr) in a public space, that may have influence over the minds and attitudes of others (not that that is the direct intent) and then run scared from accounting publicly for the foundations of such beliefs, brings suspicion and perceptions of unreliability - if not baselessness - upon such assertions.

I know one important 'line'.. and it is this - if I step into a public space and make an assertion about positon A, B, or C, I'm usually in a position to bolster my assertions with reason or evidence (even if on rare occasions I may not immediately provide such). Quite clearly some prefer to cross the line - on important matters of life and principle - but be unprepared offer anything of real substance for such views. In odda words like dey does say dong on yuh beloved Rock, "Man eef I say so, is so?". And dat is what it reminds me of - not just the words. Confirm or deny whedda dat is dee modus operandi you subscribe to. Nah ah take dat back. Keep it simple - jes do dee duck and run again!! ;) :)
